Got totally blindsided in a Denver team meeting last month

My manager called out my project update as 'lacking strategic vision' in front of 12 people, which was a shock because I'd only focused on the raw data. It made me realize I wasn't framing my work to show its business impact, just the tasks I completed. How do you guys make sure your updates connect your daily work to bigger goals?

My buddy got chewed out for the same thing. Now he starts every update by saying which company goal his work moves forward.

Yeah I started doing that too. Just name the goal right at the top, saves a ton of time. Boss loves it now.

Yeah, did you catch that Harvard Business Review article from a couple months ago? They ran a study on how people process work updates. Turns out our brains latch onto the "why" way faster than the "what." So your buddy's onto something smart. It's basically giving the boss a mental shortcut before they even read the details. Makes everything click into place.
