I was 26 and had been busting my butt as a coordinator for 2 years, working through lunch almost every day. She looked me right in the eye and basically explained that keeping me in my current role was easier for HER, not better for me. That one meeting is why I stopped treating my job like a place that owed me anything and started treating it like a business deal. Anyone else had a boss say something like that and it just lit a fire under you to leave?
I heard a similar story on a podcast once where a guy got told he was "too important to move" and he said that line woke him up more than any raise ever could. The part that stuck with me was how he described it as a light switch, one day he's loyal and the next he's just clocking hours while job hunting on his lunch break. Sounds like that Charlotte meeting did the same thing for you, which honestly is a gift even if it stung at the time.
