Question about asking for a raise at my old station

I finally asked my captain in Phoenix for a 5% raise after two years without one, and he said yes right away. I was honestly shocked because I'd been putting it off for months thinking it would be a whole big negotiation. The lesson I learned is that sometimes you just have to ask directly and be ready with your reasons. Has anyone else been surprised by how simple a tough conversation actually turned out to be?

Two years without a raise is a long time in Phoenix. A 5% bump barely covers inflation over that period. You should have asked for more.
