One foreman's note on my finish work changed my whole method

Last spring on a job in Tacoma, the foreman pulled me aside and said my trim joints were too tight, which sounded backwards to me at first. He showed me how wood expands in the humidity there, and those perfect seams were actually causing buckling by week two. Switched to leaving a hairline gap, about 1/16th of an inch, and using a backer rod before caulk, and we haven't had a callback since. Anyone else get pushback on leaving intentional gaps, or was I the only one taught to cram everything flush?
