PSA: I dropped $180 on a used biscuit joiner and it saved my countertop build, but now I'm wondering if I just got lucky
So about 8 months back I was building a walnut countertop for my sister's kitchen in Tacoma and I was stressing about keeping all the boards lined up for the glue up. I found a used Porter Cable biscuit joiner on marketplace for $180 and figured worst case I'm out a buck eighty. It ended up being the best money I ever spent because those biscuits kept everything dead flat and the seams basically vanished after sanding, way better than the dowel jig I'd been fighting with for years. But here's the thing, a buddy of mine bought the same model and his fence was out of square right out of the box, so he had to shim it with tape just to get a straight cut. Now I'm stuck wondering if I just got a good one or if he got a lemon, because I've heard both stories from different guys in my shop. Some folks swear biscuits are a crutch and you should just learn to clamp properly, while others say they're the only reason they can do a glue up solo without losing their mind. Where do you all land on this, is a biscuit joiner a legit game changer or did I just get lucky with a used tool that happened to be set up right?
