Serious question, a mod in my local sub banned me for a word filter mistake and it made me reread the rules

Last month in the Cleveland sub I typed a normal reply about a city council meeting and got a 7 day ban because one word tripped their auto filter. When I asked why, the mod replied "the filter is the rules, read them" and that line stuck with me. Now I read a mod's removal reasons before I post anywhere, but is that just giving in to lazy rule making?
