Why does nobody mention checking the smoke shelf on a first clean?
I did a first clean on a 1920s colonial in Providence last month and spent 45 minutes fighting creosote off the smoke shelf because I never checked if the damper was open before I started scraping. My grandfather, who swept for 30 years, watched me pull a face full of soot and just said 'you sweep the shelf before the flue, always'. Now I want to know, do you hit the shelf first or last on a dirty fireplace, and does it really matter on a wood stove too?
