Just hit 40,000 miles on my 1966 Mustang since the rebuild, and I did all the work myself
Bought this car in 2018 with a tired 289 and a nasty oil leak, and I finally crossed 40,000 miles on the rebuilt motor last weekend. That number matters to me because the first 10,000 miles were pure trial and error in my garage here in Sacramento, mostly me redoing stuff I got wrong the first time. I did the break in myself with plain dino oil and swapped it at 500 miles, then again at 1,500, and I still change it every 3,000 like clockwork. The valve cover gaskets weeped a little around 20,000 so I retorqued them and switched to a thicker gasket, and that fixed it for good. My dad kept saying I would blow it up before 5,000, so hitting 40k feels pretty sweet. For the folks who drive their classics instead of trailering them, how many miles do you have on your rebuild and what finally made you trust the motor?
