Dropped $80 on a smart thermostat that doesn't work with my window unit

Bought a Google Nest last month thinking it would save me money on AC, but my apartment only has window units and it's not compatible at all. Now it's sitting in a drawer because I missed the return window. Anyone else fall for smart home gear that doesn't fit old buildings?

Man I felt this. Bought a smart lock for my old door and same thing happened.

Honestly the key is checking if your door is actually square before installing. I fought with mine for like two hours before I realized the frame was slightly crooked. A simple door alignment kit from the hardware store fixed most of it, and then the lock worked fine. Idk if you tried that but it saved me from having to return the whole thing.
