Hit 12 months of zero waste and my trash jar barely fit a coffee mug

I started this zero waste thing last year mostly to save money on bins bags but after 12 months my whole trash from a month fits in a small mason jar lol. That surprised me more than the climate impact honestly because I didn't think I'd change habits that fast. It's just me in a one bedroom in Portland and I compost through a local pickup service which costs $15 a month but totally worth it. Anyone else ever measure their actual waste output and get shocked by the numbers?

Start composting too and holy crap it changes everything. I'm in Seattle and even without a pickup service just a small tumbler in my backyard cuts my trash by like 80 percent. It forces you to think about every wrapper or container you bring home because now you have to deal with it instead of just tossing it. The first few months I kept staring at my trash can like "wait this is actually basically empty." Biggest shock for me was realizing how much of my waste was just food scraps and packaging that could have been avoided with slightly better planning at the grocery store. Now I keep a running tally in my head of what I'm throwing away and it's kind of a game to get that number down even lower each week.

Composting made me realize I'm basically running a tiny farm for worms.
