Just found out my city's recycling program burns most of our plastic

I was digging through my city's waste management website last night and found a report saying only 9% of plastic collected in Portland gets turned into new products. The rest? They ship it to a waste-to-energy plant 40 miles south and burn it for electricity. I've been rinsing out yogurt cups for years thinking I was helping. Anyone else feel like the whole system is kind of a lie?

Start calling your local waste office and ask them directly what happens to your plastics.
