Just hit 3,000 pounds of food waste diverted from landfill in 6 months and I'm shook
I started weighing our community garden's compost output back in February because I wanted to prove a point to my HOA. Turns out we diverted 3,040 pounds of kitchen scraps and yard trimmings from the dump in exactly half a year. That's roughly the weight of a small car just rotting in a pile instead of producing methane under plastic. The real kicker? We only have 14 active households participating. If every block in my city did this, the numbers would be insane. Anyone else tracking this stuff and getting surprised by the actual impact?

That 3,040 pounds from just 14 households really puts it in perspective. Scale that up to a whole city and we're talking about keeping literal tons of methane out of the air every month.

Used to roll my eyes at composting programs, figured the carbon footprint of trucks hauling scraps around canceled out any benefit. But seeing those numbers from just a few houses, 3,040 pounds is way more than I guessed. My neighborhood has about 2,000 homes, so the math on that is pretty staggering for a monthly total. Changed my mind on whether these programs actually move the needle or not.
