Barista at a shop in Portland rolled his eyes when I ordered a dark roast, and I think the light roast crowd has it backwards
Last week I was at a cafe on Alberta St in Portland and asked for their darkest roast, and the barista gave me this look like I just asked for burnt toast. He told me light roasts are the only way to taste what the beans are really doing, which I think misses the point of why a lot of us drink coffee in the first place. I have tried maybe 15 different light roasts over the past year and half of them tasted like lemon tea with a hint of grass, not coffee. A dark roast done well gives you chocolate and smoke and a body that actually holds up with cream, and there is nothing wrong with wanting that. I get that light roasts show off origin flavors, but acting like dark roast is for beginners feels like gatekeeping for no reason. Curious if anyone here has found a light roast that changed their mind, or if I am just wired for the darker stuff.
