Found out my school paid a speaker $28,000 and now I can't stop thinking about it
I was digging through old student gov budget docs for a class project at Ohio State and saw they dropped $28,000 on a single speaker last spring. That's more than my whole department spends on guest lecturers for a year. What really got me is the invite list was basically closed, no student group got to vote on it. Does anyone know if that kind of money is normal for these campus speaker deals, or is my school just wilding?
The $28k at Ohio State is actually on the lower end from what I've seen. My old school dropped like $75k on a former senator a few years back, and that was before any travel or security costs got tacked on. What bugs me is the closed invite list part. A budget that big and students don't even get a say in who shows up. You'd think student gov would at least put it to a vote or something.
