Appreciation post: the hidden comic bins at the county library sale
So I stopped by the big used book sale at the county library last Saturday, mostly to kill time while my car was getting an oil change nearby. I wandered over to the corner where they keep the old magazines and graphic novels, and someone had dumped maybe 40 long boxes of comics there for a dollar each. I found a full run of Giffen and DeMatteis Justice League from the late 80s, the real goofy funny era, plus a beat up copy of the first appearance of the Rose from Daredevil comics. I spent about 80 bucks and walked out with 5 complete story arcs I had been hunting for years. It felt like a mini victory because I normally only check my local shop's back issue bins, which are picked over and overpriced. Has anyone else had a surprise score like this at a non comic store, like a garage sale or thrift shop? I want to know where else I should be looking.
That line about the picked over back issue bins really hits home. My best haul came from an estate sale three summers back, where a guy's widow was selling off his whole collection in the garage. Nobody there cared about comics, so I got a run of Claremont X-Men for fifty cents each while people fought over the old furniture. The key is going on the last day of these sales, since sellers get desperate and will practically give stuff away. Church rummage sales are another good one, especially in older neighborhoods where somebody's grown kid cleaned out an attic. Also check estate sale listings online the night before and look for photos with long boxes in the background.
