TIL I was finishing slabs way too early after watching a guy in Mesa work a pour
I was on a job in Mesa last month and this older finisher let me watch him work a 40x60 slab. I always hopped on the power trowel as soon as I could stand on it, but he waited almost an extra hour and kept checking it with his boot heel. When he finally got on it the finish came out way flatter and we didn't get one blister. I tried it on my next pour in Chandler and spent half the time chasing the edges because the mud had set up on me. So now I'm wondering, how do you all read the slab without just guessing on the heel test?
That extra hour is real. I watched a guy in Gilbert do the same thing, he dragged a screed board across it and watched how the mud held the lines before he ever touched the trowel. What finally clicked for me was poking the surface with a screwdriver about an inch from the edge, if it leaves a clean hole with no water bleeding back in you got maybe 15 more minutes. On a hot day here in July though that window shrinks fast, so I start on the edges first and work my way in.
