When our concrete pour turned into a marathon wait

My cousin and I were finishing a small slab for his shed foundation last fall. We ordered the concrete for early morning to beat the heat. The truck showed up on time, but then the driver had mixer issues and needed a part. We sat there for four hours, watching the clock and the concrete slowly hardening in the chute. He finally fixed it, but we had to rush the finish as the sun went down. It was dark by the time we smoothed the last edge with flashlights. We still laugh about how a simple job turned into an all-day saga.

That "watching the concrete slowly hardening in the chute" is the worst feeling. We had a delay once and kept the mix workable by asking the driver to add small amounts of water and run the drum. We also covered the slab with plastic while we waited, which bought us a little extra time for the final finish. What did your driver try to do while fixing the mixer?

But is it that big of a deal? Concrete doesn't set up that fast unless it's crazy hot out. Seems like a bit of a panic over nothing.

Used to think water ruined it, now I get why they add some.
