Hot take: a 20 year roofer in Fort Worth told me to stop cleaning my gutters every spring and I listened
I used to climb up there every April and pull out all the leaves and shingle grit by hand. He watched me do it once and said I was actually pulling the granules out of the shingle edges faster and wearing the roof out, plus twice I almost went off the ladder. He said just check the downspouts after the big fall storms and blow them out if they clog, otherwise leave the top alone. That was four years ago and I haven't had a single overflow, so now I'm wondering what other maintenance I'm doing wrong. Any roofers here agree with him or is he just tired of homeowners calling?
Holy crap, pulling granules off by hand never even crossed my mind as a bad thing. That actually makes sense though, since the grit is what keeps the sun from eating through the shingles. Guess I've been scrubbing years off my own roof every spring like an idiot.
