Counted 47 different oaks on my walk to the mailbox and now I see trees everywhere
So I got bored on my morning walk down to the mailbox at the end of my gravel drive in rural Missouri and started counting the trees along the way. I figured I'd get maybe 10 or 12 before I ran out. I stopped counting at 47 and I wasn't even trying that hard. What got me was how many of them I could actually name now, because two summers ago I couldn't tell a red oak from a pin oak to save my life. I started looking up bark patterns and leaf shapes after a buddy pointed out a bur oak in my back pasture that I'd been calling a white oak for 6 years. Something about bur oak acorns with those fuzzy caps just stuck in my head and then suddenly every tree on my property had a name. I've got shingle oak, black oak, post oak, chinkapin, and at least three I'm still trying to figure out. Now I can't drive down any road without naming stuff out the window and my wife is sick of hearing about it. Anyone else start with one tree and end up weirdly obsessed with a whole genus?
