Spent $180 on a rainbow eucalyptus and it died in 5 weeks, here is what I learned

Bought a 4 foot rainbow eucalyptus from a nursery in San Diego last spring for $180 plus $40 shipping, and it was dead in 5 weeks even though I did everything the tag said. Turns out these trees hate being moved and need way more humidity than my yard gets, so I basically paid $220 for a stick. Has anyone actually kept one of these alive outside a greenhouse, or am I just out of luck?
