I mean, idk, maybe it's just me, but I picked up the habit of crafting prompts from overheard arguments, and it's sparked so many stories, yet a writing group pal insists it's borderline intrusive. Debate: raw material or respect for privacy?

Your pal might be overthinking it. Writers are professional people-watchers, and public conversations are fair game. Calling that intrusive is a bit much.
