Drove through a neighborhood I built in back in 2012 and barely recognized it
I was out near the old Miller farm development in Springfield yesterday, a project I worked on over a decade ago. Back then, we were putting up these solid, simple 3-bedroom homes with real brick facades and covered front porches you could actually sit on. Now, half the street has been torn down and replaced with these huge, flat-roofed modern boxes that go right to the lot line. They look like art galleries, not houses where people live. The materials are all gray composite siding and big sheets of glass, nothing with any weight to it. It just feels like the whole idea of a 'home' has changed from a place to put down roots to a statement piece. Makes me wonder if anyone still asks for those classic details, like a proper fireplace or a deep porch, or if that style is just gone for good.

Ugh, that's bleak. Makes you wonder if those new places even have attics or basements for kids to explore and store family stuff, or if it's all just open-plan white boxes.

Open-plan white boxes" is exactly it. My sister bought one of those places. Her kid's toys are just always out in the living room now because there's no other spot for them. They had to buy a fancy storage bench that just looks like more clutter. The whole house feels like a showroom, not a place you can actually mess up and live in.
