Dodgy VPN add-on ate my login data, $140 down the drain
Last month I needed to check my tenant portal from a public wifi spot, so I grabbed some random free VPN extension. Big mistake. It worked for like a week, then suddenly my landlord account got locked with weird login attempts from overseas. Support said the extension was stealing credentials. I had to pay $140 for a credit monitoring service and change every password I own. Ended up using my bank's built-in VPN app, which was free. Anyone else get burned by sketchy browser extensions shaped like security tools?

Free VPN extensions are basically a gamble, and the house usually wins. But $140 for credit monitoring feels like the real scam here. Your bank's app probably has the same risks, you just trust it because it has a nice logo. Most of these "hacked" stories end up being people reusing the same password from a breached site. Maybe check if your email shows up on haveibeenpwned before blaming the extension. If nothing else, this is a cheap lesson about public wifi. I'd still be using the VPN, just a paid one next time.
