Switched from SMS 2FA to an authenticator app after a sim swap scare

Got hit with a sim swap attempt last month in Chicago, my phone just went dead for like 2 hours while I was at work. Turns out someone tried porting my number but my carrier stopped it, still scared me enough though. Moved all my accounts over to a TOTP app that weekend, took maybe 30 minutes for my main logins. Now I'm wondering if anyone else has backup codes stored somewhere safe, or do you just trust the app forever?
