Church potluck politics got more heated than any debate I've been in

Last month at our congregation's potluck in Austin, someone brought up the new shelter policy and it turned into a 45 minute argument. I said we should focus on helping people first and let the city sort out the rules, which got me labeled as too soft. But honestly, the loudest voices were the ones who'd never actually volunteered at the shelter. I've done two shifts a month for three years and the problems on the ground don't match what people assume. Why do we treat opinions from people with zero hands-on time as equal to those who've lived it? Has anyone else seen church arguments turn more personal than political ones?
