My uncle in Ohio changed his party last year after a talk at a diner

Last month my uncle in Dayton switched his voter registration from Republican to Independent. He said a guy at his regular diner told him both parties are owned by the same folks. Uncle asked me if I thought that was true. I told him I think it's more like two loud families arguing over the TV remote while nobody fixes the leaky sink. Has anyone here actually changed their mind about a big political idea from a casual talk like that?
