Spent $4,200 on a whole house surge protector after a lightning strike fried my garage opener, and my neighbor thinks I got scammed
My neighbor keeps telling me I wasted my money and that a $60 strip from the hardware store would do the same thing, but I watched a strike come in through the panel and take out my opener, the fridge board, and the furnace control in one shot, so I want to know if anyone else in the Denver area has dealt with this and what they did about it.
I read somewhere that those cheap strips only guard against small spikes, not a direct hit like what you got. Once it comes through the panel like that, whole house is really the only thing that covers it. Your neighbor is comparing two totally different things.
