Chose reman heads over machine shop, feeling the sting now
Had a cracked head on my 6.7 Cummins in Boise, went with a $1,200 reman pair instead of paying $800 to get the originals resurfaced and pressure tested. The remans were delivered quick but one had a bad valve seat, leaked compression on cylinder 4 after 400 miles. Anyone else gamble on reman parts to save time and end up doing double labor?
Bad valve seat on a reman isn't really a "you rolled the dice and lost" thing, that's a warranty claim waiting to happen. $1,200 for a pair isn't even cheap enough to be sketchy, that's normal market price for remans, so I'm not sure the gamble was as wild as you're making it sound. 400 miles is basically a break-in period, so if the seat was bad from the start the shop that built them owes you a replacement head, not a lecture about cheaping out. Have you actually called whoever sold them yet, or are you just assuming you're stuck eating the labor? Because most reman places warranty their heads for way longer than 400 miles.
