Showerthought: I thought digital art was just a computer doing the work until my niece showed me her 47 layers on one drawing
My niece is 16 and draws on a tablet in her bedroom in Toledo, and I figured the software did most of the heavy lifting, kinda like a filter on a phone. Last weekend she walked me through one piece, and there were 47 separate layers, most of them just for shading under the chin and the folds in a jacket collar. She spent about 11 hours total on it and redid the left eye four times because the light source was wrong. I still can't draw a straight line on paper, so maybe I'm just easily impressed, but that changed how I look at the stuff posted here. Anyone got a favorite piece where you can actually tell how much time went into it?
My nephew did the same thing to me last year, he's 19 and works in Photoshop for like 6 hours straight on one character drawing. I watched him zoom in so far you could see individual brush strokes just on the nose, and he had like 30 layers going for hair alone, one for shadow, one for shine, one for flyaway strands. Before that I honestly thought people just clicked a button and boom, art. I sat there feeling dumb for about an hour, lol.
