Took me 6 months to figure out my blending was wrecking my paintings

I kept wondering why my digital pieces looked muddy and flat, even after watching a ton of tutorials. Then last week a friend looked over my shoulder and said "why are you using the soft brush for everything?" I spent the whole time relying on a single brush at 100% opacity, never varying my stroke or layering colors properly. Switched to a harder edge brush with some texture and suddenly my shadows and highlights actually popped. Has anyone else had a basic tool hold them back for way too long?

The "soft brush trap" is exactly right, but I think people miss that it's not just the brush itself. It's that soft brushes make you lazy about color choice. When you use a hard brush, you have to pick the exact right color for shadows because you can't just feather it into oblivion. It forces you to actually understand your values instead of just smudging stuff together and hoping it works. Plus hard brushes teach you economy of strokes, you learn to put a mark down with purpose instead of just painting on autopilot.
