Hit 12 months of location independence and the number that got me was $0

I passed my one year mark as a digital nomad last Tuesday, but what really surprised me was checking my bank account and seeing zero dollars in savings. I've been bouncing between Lisbon and Medellin, picking up freelance editing gigs on Upwork, and I thought I was doing fine. But then my laptop died in a coffee shop in Colombia and I realized I had no buffer at all, not even for a cheap repair. I've seen so many posts about people hitting big income milestones, but my scary number was just having no cushion. Has anyone else made it to a year without building a safety net, and what did you do when something broke?
