Packed 3 suitcases for a month in Chiang Mai, now I fit a year in one bag
Back in 2019 I flew to Thailand hauling 70 pounds of gear, including a dedicated bag for shoes and a full-size hair dryer I used maybe twice. Now I run a job from cafes with a 35L pack that holds a laptop, 6 outfits, and my work phone. The change happened after I paid $240 in excess baggage fees on a flight to Bali and swore off checked luggage cold. But yesterday I caught myself missing the old weight, weirdly enough, since a heavy bag forced me to slow down and pick one spot for the week. Anyone else trade practical packing for speed and then question if you lost something else along the way?
My buddy Dave did the same thing after a trip to Lisbon in 2021. He shipped his big bag home and swore he'd never check a bag again. Fast forward two years and he's in Oaxaca for six weeks, living out of a 40L pack, and he told me he barely left his neighborhood the whole time. Said without the weight of all his stuff he just kept moving, never unpacked, never settled. He missed getting lost in a place because he knew he could always just bail the next day.
