Warning: Skipping travel insurance seemed good for my budget, but a hospital bill abroad changed my view. Do you risk it or always cover yourself?

Think about all the small stuff that goes wrong before a hospital trip even happens. Lost luggage could mean buying a whole new wardrobe in Tokyo, a missed tour because your flight got canceled, or even just a bad rental car scratch. Good travel insurance covers those boring headaches that drain your budget and mood. It's not just about the big disaster, it's about saving your whole trip from a death by a thousand cuts.

My buddy broke his arm skiing in Switzerland last winter. The clinic visit alone was over two thousand francs before they even did the x-ray. His basic insurance from back home fought him on coverage for weeks. Watching him deal with that mess from afar totally changed my math on this. Now I always get a policy that specifically covers sports and has clear medical payout rules. What’s the most you’d be willing to pay out of pocket if something went wrong?

Skip the insurance and you're basically gambling with your rent money. I'd pay maybe a few hundred bucks tops before I'd want a real policy to kick in. That peace of mind is worth way more than the premium.
