Question about layering kicks in small clubs, my monitor mix lied to me

Last Friday in San Salvador I layered a punchy 909 with a round house kick on top for my 'D11-04' set, and the floor sound was muddy as hell even though my headphones said it was tight. A local sound guy named Carlos told me to check the 200Hz range on the main system before adding the second kick, and he was right, that's where everything was colliding. Has anyone else found that playing with high-pass filters on the secondary kick around 150Hz saves your low end in cramped venues?

Yeah, I used to just stack kicks and hope for the best. Carlos is totally right though, that 200Hz zone is where everything turns to soup in a small room. High-passing the second kick around 150Hz is a simple fix that honestly changed how I set up my low end for tight spaces.

Tbh the real fix is checking your kick phase before you even touch the filters.
