My $45 moisture meter lied to me and now my subfloor is warped
Bought a cheap pin-style moisture meter off Amazon last spring before laying laminate in my basement in Columbus, it read everything as dry so I skipped the vapor barrier and eight months later the planks are buckling in three spots, has anyone else had a cheap meter give false readings or did I just install it wrong?
Aw man, that sucks big time. But honestly, the meter might not be the only problem here. Those cheap pin meters only measure the surface, and in a basement in Columbus the concrete slab can be pulling moisture from the ground way below where those pins reach. You really gotta test deeper, or just use the plastic sheet test where you tape a square of plastic to the bare concrete and check for condensation after a day or two. Also, if you laid it in the spring, the slab could've been cold and the air warm, which messes with readings too. The vapor barrier should've been non-negotiable for a basement regardless of what that thing said.
