Old timer told me my taping knife was too wide for corners, took me 2 months to admit he was right
Guy I work with on bigger jobs, been hanging and taping since the 80s. Watched me feather an inside corner with my 12 inch and just shook his head. Said I was fighting the tool, that corners need a 6 inch to lay the mud right. I brushed him off, been doing it my way for 5 years. Last week I finally tried his way on a hallway in a remodel over in Fresno. Honestly? Mud went on flatter, way less sanding after. Felt stupid but I'm switching now. Anyone else get stubborn about a tool and then realized the old heads were just trying to save you time?

That line about fighting the tool really hits. Reminds me of when I was learning to weld and kept using this big old stick rod for everything because it felt powerful. My uncle watched me struggle on some thin sheet metal for an hour, then handed me a tiny 6013 rod and said nothing. night and day difference. Sometimes the right tool is the one that feels wrong at first.
