The foreman's two-finger rule cost me a whole panel

Old timer on my crew told me to always hold drywall screws two fingers from the driver tip, said it keeps them from snapping. I figured he was just being picky, so I ignored it and grabbed the screw gun however felt natural. Snapped three screws in one sheet, tore the paper, and had to cut the whole panel out. Next day I tried his way on a ceiling job and it worked perfect, not one strip. Anyone else get handed some weird habit from an old hand that actually turned out to be the secret?

That tip sound like one of those things you have to learn the hard way before it sticks. Did you notice if the two fingers changed how the screw seated in the paper, like less dust or a cleaner dimple? Trying to figure out if the trick is more about the angle or the speed of the gun.
