Two coats with a 14-inch taping knife vs my old 4-inch, night and day on this hotel job

Last month in Reno I was finishing a hallway with a 4-inch knife, chasing every bubble and burying each joint three times. Switched to the 14-inch for the second pass and knocked out the same straight run in one smooth pull, no pinholes, no touch-ups. Anyone else find that going wider on the finish coat fixes more than just speed, or was my old technique just garbage?
