The way I shop for food now vs. back home in Aleppo
Back in Syria I used to visit the same vegetable seller every morning and he would pick out the best produce for me, no questions asked. Now in Berlin I spend an hour at the discount market comparing prices and checking expiration dates on everything. The change happened about 6 months after I arrived, when I realized I could not afford to waste even one euro on something that would go bad. I also stopped buying in bulk because my fridge is half the size of what I had at home. It feels strange to budget for cucumbers when I used to just grab whatever looked good. Has anyone else found their shopping habits completely changed by their new city's prices and portions?

...and now I'm out here doing calculus on whether the 2 euro bag of apples is cheaper per kilo than the 3 euro bag where three of them are bruised. My mom would laugh her ass off if she saw me checking the back of the yogurt for the good until date like it's some kind of treasure hunt. I used to just walk into the shop and say "give me what's good" and that was that, nobody died. Now I've got a spreadsheet in my head for flour prices and I'm pretty sure that's not the kind of growth I moved here for. Does the thrill of finding a discount on oat milk ever wear off, or are we just broken forever?
