The Home Depot parking lot on 82nd saved my drywall project last weekend
A forklift driver there showed me how to load 4x8 sheets solo by tilting them against the roof of my truck instead of sliding them flat and now I never bring a second person for materials.

My 2003 Tacoma has a 5 foot bed and I tried that trick once. Ended up with two small dents in the roof where the corner of the sheet pressed in when I hit a bump on the way home. I guess if your truck has a stiffer roof or you drive real slow it might work fine. But for me, sliding them in flat on some old moving blankets has been safer and doesn't risk body damage. Plus the blankets protect the sheet edges from chipping on the tailgate. I still bring a helper because loading solo is fine but unloading by myself is a pain in the neck.
