Took 6 months to settle a neighbor fence dispute in Edmonton

My neighbor put up a new fence right on the property line without talking to me first. I found out the city has a 2 meter setback rule for fences over 6 feet tall, so I had to file a complaint with the city planning department. Went back and forth with him for months through mediation, which cost me $300 in fees. Eventually the city ordered him to move the fence back 18 inches, but it took a full 6 months from start to finish. Has anyone else had a property line fight drag out that long?

Tbh @robin489 you're not wrong but a buddy of mine in Vancouver had a fence war that dragged on 14 months.

$300 for mediation actually sounds pretty reasonable to me (a lawyer friend told me similar disputes can hit thousands in legal fees). I actually side with your neighbor here though - you moved next to someone who wanted a taller fence and then used the city rule to force him to redo it 18 inches back. That's basically making him eat the cost of a whole new install just because you didn't like his choice. 6 months is actually fast for government stuff too, I've seen property line fights take over a year in Calgary easy.
