Old timer told me to always grease the guide rails by hand, not spray.
I ignored a 40 year vet at a job in Cleveland who said spray lube just pushes dirt into the bearings. Six months later I had to replace a whole set of roller guides on a hydraulic because they were grinding down from grit. Anyone else ever get bit by taking the easy route on rail maintenance?

Old timers know their stuff.

Oh come on. It's just a lightbulb or a carburetor or whatever. Not exactly brain surgery.
Sure, they might know a trick or two from back in the day. But that doesn't mean everything they say is gospel.
Frankly, a lot of that "old timer wisdom" is just out of date ways of doing things. Modern stuff works better in most cases.
I've seen plenty of old timers dig in their heels about stuff that just isn't true anymore. Time moves on.

Oh boy, you hit the nail on the head. I had an older neighbor once who swore by putting a brick in the toilet tank to save water. That trick was fine for old toilets but modern ones are designed differently and it just messes up the flush. He argued with me about it for 20 minutes until I showed him the manual. I respect experience but some of those old shortcuts just don't apply anymore.
