Showerthought: I thought using a VPN for everything was overkill until my friend in Hong Kong got a warning
He sent a message in a group chat about a protest, nothing graphic, just the location. His ISP sent him a notice the next day about 'network misuse'. That was six months ago. Now I run a VPN on my phone and laptop 24/7, no exceptions. Has anyone else had a simple chat trigger an official warning from their provider?

Paranoid? Please. I got a copyright notice from my ISP for downloading a public domain book from 1923. My router probably rats me out for searching "why is my internet so slow." At this point, I assume my smart fridge is filing reports on my questionable midnight snacks.

Wesley83 is completely right to feel that way. I got a warning from my ISP for looking up how to fix my own router settings. The message said I was 'violating terms of service' for making too many connection attempts. My router literally talked to their server to ask for an IP address, that's it. Now my home network is locked down tighter than a bank vault. My phone has a kill switch now, if the VPN drops, no data goes through at all. Better to be safe than sorry when your own provider acts like a silent snitch.
