Honestly, I used to think the 'Tulsa Race Massacre' was just a footnote in my old high school textbook

Ngl, after reading a survivor's account from the 1921 Greenwood district, I realized how much was actively erased from the record. Anyone else have a local history that got completely whitewashed?

Man, this hits close to home. A buddy of mine grew up near this old mill town, and they had this whole "Founder's Day" festival every year. He only found out as an adult that the "founder" they celebrated basically stole the land through shady deals that forced out a bunch of families who'd been there for generations. The festival just quietly stopped a few years back, no explanation. Makes you wonder what's baked into the brickwork of every "nice" town.

Yeah that's rough, and it's everywhere. Andrew_kelly's buddy's story is basically the quiet part out loud. They probably stopped the festival because someone finally did the math on how bad it looked once the real history got out. Makes you side-eye every little town's "heritage" plaque.

Heard a similar story about a friend's town parade.
