Watching a new guy at the scrap yard taught me to sort my own loads better.

I was dropping off a load of old sprues and risers at the yard on 5th Street last week. This young guy was unloading a truck and just dumping everything, cast iron and aluminum all mixed together. The scale operator gave him the price for straight cast, which was way lower than if he'd kept them apart. I used to be a bit lazy about sorting too, but seeing him lose maybe 200 bucks in five minutes made it click. Now I bring three separate bins in my truck bed. How do you all handle your scrap sorting to get the best price?

My uncle's garage is a mess, but his scrap pile is sorted perfectly. It's like @martin.andrew said, that one lesson sticks with you. People will put up with chaos everywhere except where it costs them money.

Seeing that happen once was enough for me to start using separate buckets too.

My dad's the same way... his whole shop is a disaster but his nuts and bolts are sorted by size.
