Watching a pour go wrong at the old Gary Works taught me to always check the ladle lining twice.

We lost a full heat of 4340 because a hairline crack in the refractory let air in and caused a massive boil-over, so what's your best pre-pour check routine?

That "hairline crack" story shows why a visual check alone isn't enough, you gotta tap the lining too.

Wait, they found a crack just by tapping it? @abbyc33, that's wild. I always figured if you couldn't see it, you were probably fine. So the sound is really that different? It makes sense, I guess a solid piece and a cracked piece would sound nothing alike. That's a scary story, makes me rethink how I check my own stuff. Gonna start tapping everything now.

Right, "gonna start tapping everything now" lol good luck explaining to your friends why you're knocking on plates like a door. But seriously @vera541, it's crazy how a clean ping versus a dull thud gives it away. I tried it on an old mug and the cracked one sounded like a wet cardboard box.
