Weird flex: I actively avoid long-term contracts
Everyone tells me to lock in clients with contracts, but I hate the pressure. I've had more success with short, one-off gigs that let me bounce around. It keeps things fresh, but my friends think I'm nuts lmao. Any advice on making this work long-term?

But how do you get steady work without them?

Check out how many freelancers skip agents and find work online. @christopherperry, you can build a client list through sites like LinkedIn or even Instagram. I know graphic designers who post their projects and get daily offers. Writers use Twitter threads to show their style and land regular gigs. It's not easy, but you can make it happen with consistent effort. Just network smart and let your work speak for itself.

Except you're fighting an algorithm that buries your posts unless you pay to boost them. Most of those "daily offers" are lowball gigs or scams. Building a real client list from zero on social media takes years of unpaid posting, and even then, it's a hustle with no safety net. An agent might take a cut, but they bring you steady jobs so you can actually focus on the work, not just on begging for it online.
