Unpopular opinion: Our probe's flawless Jupiter flyby data haul is shadowed by proprietary access debates

Honestly, hitting all our instrument calibration targets feels amazing. Ngl, the argument over locking the atmospheric data behind institutional paywalls sits wrong with me, especially for publicly funded science.

Consider how locking data lets scientists check it carefully first. This stops wrong ideas from spreading based on messy early info. Yes, taxpayers pay, but that means we owe them accurate results, not just fast ones. Paywalls help cover the costs of journals that organize and share the research. Releasing data too quickly can lead to mistakes or even harm if it's not ready. Isn't it better to make sure the science is solid before everyone gets access?

Taxpayers foot the bill, then get locked out of the results.

Demand pre-publication data deposits in public repositories. It creates an immutable record before paywalls go up. We did this and it cut through the institutional nonsense.
