Unpopular opinion: Old farm tricks for saving water should be common knowledge

I helped set up a pump system for a small family farm that uses dry farming methods. They plant crops in a way that needs very little irrigation. This knowledge comes from generations of working the land. It's not taught in big agriculture schools because it doesn't sell new equipment. But in dry areas, it keeps farms going with less water. More people need to hear about these practical fixes from growers who know the land.

I watched a documentary about wheat farmers in Western Australia using ancient contour banking. They shape the land to catch every drop of rain, which is just local knowledge passed down. It proves these low tech ideas are often the smartest fixes for dry times.

That sounds smarter than my rain-catching method, which is just forgetting my umbrella.

Ancient contour banking? That's still a thing people actually do? I always figured that was some old history book technique nobody used anymore. How does just shaping the land work better than all our modern pipes and pumps? It's kind of shocking that the smartest answer is basically just digging ditches. What else are we overlooking because it seems too simple?
