Took 3 days to get GPT to stop making up citations for me

I use AI to draft research summaries for my job at a nonprofit in Denver. Kept telling it to double check sources but it still invented 4 fake papers. Learned I have to paste the actual URLs myself and ask it to only cite those, that finally worked after a full weekend of troubleshooting. Anyone else have to babysit AI that much just to get reliable references?

What if the citations it invents are pulling from real papers that are just slightly wrong, so it looks too real to catch?
